You may recall that last year we thought we would get our own goats. Alas, free goats were not to be for us, and considering that it would have meant a lot of extra work, I’m not complaining. Especially since my neighbor Crystal has lots of goats that I can go visit and not have to build fence, feed, worm or anything else. I can just oooo and aaaah over them and then go home to a glass of wine. Hmmm…I’m kinda like a nanny granny I do believe!
Anywho, I thought you might enjoy a peek at Crystal’s goats too. They are darn cute and looking at baby animals is probably the third best thing about spring (right behind warm temperatures and looking at flowers).
I grew up near Michigan State University and every spring the college would host a small animal day. I have fond memories of feeding goats and other little beasties. In my inner-6-year-old-child-mind they all look like that little gal above.
I also loved holding baby chicks, but so far I haven’t had that opportunity as an adult. Maybe I should go back for small animal day this year.
In any case, Crystal was able to fulfill my desire to hold a baby goat, but they made us work for it! And when I say us, I meant Crystal since I was basically inept at anything other than saying ‘awwwww’. In the next picture, the goats are running away from Crystal and trying to decide which of her two herding dogs were the lesser of two evils:
But Crystal is a cunning goat-catcher, and knows how to sneak up on the kids when they least expect it – using their mom as camoflage!
She catches their back leg, and then – whoosh! Up in her arms they go:
By the way, did anyone notice how little the nanny seemed to care about Crystal stealing one her babies? All she wanted was some grass. This is an unfortunate comment on today’s modern goat society.
These baby goats are so soft and fuzzy wuzzy. I had to put the camera away for a while so I could love ‘em up a bit. My 6-year-old inner child was so happy.
“Hey Mom – we’re hungry!”
“Not now kids, there is a weird woman with a camera stalking you. Go lay down over there and I’ll protect you. Or I’ll mill around and find some grass. One or the other.”
“O.k. Mom.”
Good kids.
Well, that’s all the adorableness that I could capture decently. I hope you’ve enjoyed the farm visit with me. Happy spring everyone!
P.S. – thanks for all the great comments on our business site!

Enjoyed the goat photos. Not a baaaad picture in the bunch! Too late for small animals day this year … it was last Saturday. You’re lucky to have goats much closer to home.

that little lady lying by the fence is clearly plotting something. i don’t think mom’s the only one with her nose in the grass.
