September 16th, 2000 .........Final Estate
Harvest
| This picture would not have been captured were it
not for the dilemma which occurred just prior. The morning began with Katie making her
scrumptious blueberry muffins. She left me with an ample supply and delivered the
remainder to her parents, Sherrill and Judy Nott, who were staying in the cottage*. I
scarfed my muffins down with my daily ritual latte' and was ready to hit the deck
running. All was set for crushing the bounty of grapes which had been harvested the
previous day. After securing the hose and turning on the crusher, I proceeded to dump the
lugs of grapes. The machine swallowed quite a few grapes before I went into the cellar to
check on the tank.... which was still empty. The Norton grapes have such a high skin to
juice ratio because of the tiny berries, that the must was too dry to pump. The hose was
packed solid. It was about this time that Katie appeared and
assisted in separating the two hoses and shaking out the relatively dry must. Once the
grape 'muck' was freed, we moved the tank outside and proceeded with the crush using only
half the length of hose. The remainder of the grapes were Chambourcin which produced much
juicier must and pumped just fine. By this time Sherrill had arrived with his camera to
capture the height of the moment. |
